KelTech IoE 'Highly Commended' at SEAI Energy Show 2023

KelTech IoE has been ‘Highly Commended’ in the ‘Best Lighting’ category by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland.

From left to right: James Canty, CTO, KelTech IoE; Margie McCarthy, Director of Research & Policy Insights, SEAI and Eamonn Sheils, judge and SEA Programme Manager, Commercial Retrofit.

CEO of KelTech IoE, Mark Kellett commented “Keltech IoE is at the forefront of innovation when it comes to designing first/last mile and inbuilding power and communications infrastructure. Working with like-minded partners such as Westire and Electric Skyline to deliver street lighting services, faster, more sustainably and more economically”

About the submission

With our Dual Distribution Network (DDN), both power and fibre are brought to each luminaire location through the use of hybrid cable. This cable produces approximately 71% less CO2 emissions and 82% less plastic in comparison to SWA cable.

Just from street lighting alone, a medium-sized town (c4,500 dwellings) can reduce it’s load on the electrical grid by 5% just by swapping to DDN infrastructure. This would result in a 26% reduction in energy ‘leakage’ or approximately 36kWh per day.  Using 4km of cable per 108 luminaires results in a reduction of 68’400kg of CO2 emissions due to the reduction of materials required.

Power is delivered through DDN using Digital Electricity™, which is converted to SELV DC electricity within our patented hybrid enclosure. Power is then delivered from the hybrid enclosure to each luminaire with a minimum of 97% efficiency.

Other Solution Benefits:

Manufacturing:

  • More cost effective cable to manufacture with less raw materials as opposed to standard 230v/380v cable
  • Less cable required and less circuits that are lighter, easier and more cost effective to transport
  • All above contributing to less CO2 produced during manufacturing and transportation.

Installation:

  • Smaller and more efficient plant needed for installation due to weight difference between standard copper & Digital cable.
  • Less manpower required as 1 cable does all, easier installed
  • Distance and number of lights connected much larger, standard regulation in 230v systems in 8 lights per circuit, this system will cover up to 2km of lighting in 1 cable, speed of install
  • Much safer than 230v supply, in 80km+ zones passive columns used with expensive disconnection systems installed, no requirement for this with Digital Electricity, safe
  • When dealing with Digital Electricity no requirement for electrician to do terminations, trained skilled operative is adequate, electrician only required for power supply cable
  • Less power supplies for ESB due to the distance the Digital Electricity can cover
  • System more efficient overall & future proofed
